Sutherland, Welsh Landscape with Roads, 1936 / Landscape with Red Sky, 1944

In his 1942 essay ‘Welsh Sketch Book’, Graham Sutherland described Wales as a place of ‘exultant strangeness’.

His paintings and drawings show this idea with clarity. Strangeness. Yet with a desolate beauty. A land of colourful dreams and dark nightmares.
